In 2019 a global one-million-euro challenge competition was announced in order to find an answer the question: How can we decarbonise the heating of Helsinki, using as little biomass as possible?
More than half of Helsinki’s heat is produced with coal. In order to achieve carbon-neutrality, the city need radically new solutions to meet its heat demand. To fight climate change, sustainable heating solutions are needed in cities all over the world. Heating not just beyond coal, but also beyond burning biomass.
UrbanTechSweden is a partner in the sWASH&grow project which aims to accelerate implementation to those in need. The goal is to improve the opportunities for innovators and aid organizations to bring more circular, inclusive and sustainable innovations to, among other places, disaster areas.
In an era of ageing infrastructure there is also a growing need for fast solutions, off-grid. One example is in the energy sector, where changes are increasingly favouring “building more” and smaller units rather than “building larger”.

Urban Tech Sweden was initiated by The Association of Swedish Engineering Industries – Teknikföretagen – in 2019. Teknikföretagen was created in 1896 and represent more than 4.200 companies and stands for more than 30 % of the export in Sweden. Urban Techs Swedens’ portfolio is one of the largest urban tech portfolios in the world.
Urban Tech Sweden has the leading network in Sweden for clean tech and climate neutral cities. Through our commercial arms we can take the overall responsibility towards potential customers, investors and companies throughout the project cycle.
Our role is to mitigate the financial risk that exists at the beginning of the business process, project, build and commission and to bring in the eco-system needed for making the project happen.
